I have been a voracious reader of science fiction and mostly fantasy literature for the past 2 decades and recently picked up Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb because it was being offered free on Amazon Kindle. It is the first book in the Farseer Trilogy which I have come to love. In a world with such great authors as R.A. Salvatore, Terry Goodkind, the late Robert Jordan, Raymond E. Feist, David Eddings, Tad Williams, Melanie Rawn, J.R.R Tolkein, and many others I haven’t named it is with great pleasure that I found Robin Hobb’s fantastic trilogy to sit along side those other great works. Robin creates a medieval world that is so believable you almost feel yourself in the situations in the book and can easily relate to the dilemma’s the characters face. And she does it without a lot of overbearing magic, wizardry, or monsters but plenty of mayhem, political intrigue, and folklore that you will be hard pressed to put the book down. The thing that most impressed me and hooked me to this book and ultimately the entire series was her ability to develop characters that you care for and want to hear more about in just a very short time. One character in particular, without spoiling anything, was especially powerful in the storyline and with very little history or character building and in just a couple short pages, that character becomes a favorite. I love that ability in her writing to capture the essence of a character so well that you immediately love them or hate them and feel passionate about the reading of them in the rest of the book. There is plenty of sword play, villains and heroes, war, deceit, politics and economy, interesting magical concepts and creatures, vast lands to explore, ups and downs that make this trilogy an easy fun read that will get your heart pumping and keep you wanting to read more. I highly recommend this book, series, and author for the fantasy book enthusiasts out there.
