Apple and the “i-gadgets” have ruled the roost for a long time when it comes to apps and they have done it brilliantly. It’s hard to argue with the success of Steve Jobs. But there has been a lot of hype brewing in the wireless world over Google’s Android operating system for wireless phones and in my opinion if there is any brand out there that could rival Apple’s stranglehold on cool devices and apps it’s going to be Google. The iPhone’s exclusivity with AT&T has worked well and been very popular. With recent hype and buzz around Google Android based phones on Sprint with the HTC Hero and Verizon with the Motorola Droid not to mention Android pioneer T-Mobile with the G1, there are a growing list of Android based phones on the market, 10 or so and they are cool! And the app list driven by Google is growing at a very rapid rate and will continue to explode as developers flock to their platform just like they do to Apple’s.
So in Android’s infancy what are the top apps for guys…at the moment? Well there are a lot and some are funny and some are for real, so here is a list of 5 cool ones for dudes.
1. Schwartz Unsheathed – This is a fun, ridiculous app for Star Wars fans to goof around with solo (not Han) or with your buddies. I saw 2 co-workers in the office the other day using their Sprint HTC Hero Android phones to sword fight with this Android App. It makes surprisingly realistic sound effects and offers several editable features for the look of your own light saber. Check it out.
2. Fartapp – Ok seriously, did we need that? But now that it’s out there how can us guys not have it? This beats the hell out of a whoopi cushion or cupping your hand in your arm pit to make juvenile fart noises. And it has the added coolness of a delay feature so you can strategically leave a fart behind as well as vary the type of fart like “crop dusting” or other classics. Good fun stuff!
3. Carr Matey – Now here is one that is a little more serious and actually functional. Everyone knows guys hate to ask fro directions or look stupid trying to find their car in the stadium parking lot after an NFL game and full day of tailgating “where the hell did I park anyway?”. This little app has some cool features to guide you back to your car with a compass, Google map walking directions, and even has a meter timer so you don’t get towed. Now I won’t have to walk around clicking my key fob to find my car after business trips in the airport either. p.s. Maybe you should make sure your significant others have this little puppy too!
4. Pickup Lines – Pick up lines always crack me up and usually make better jokes or ice breakers than a real pick up line. So you will probably get more laughs than ladies from this Android app on your new Motorola Droid but laughs are always fun and I got more than few good chuckles.
5. Chuck Norris Facts – Widely regarded as a complete bad ass and referenced in movies, video games (daily), and even corporate presentations about knocking people out and taking shit from no one this app is another one that provides some humor. Now you can whip out more Chuck Norris whoop ass facts over a few beers with your friends.
UPDATED: The world of Android apps is a fast changing place that will see countless new apps created everyday and many of the iPhone apps converted to Android as the one listed below that I couldn’t leave off the list after learning it was just released for Android.
6. BeerHero – BeerHero is an app that will set you back $3 but does three primary things as well that many guys will love, especially in big cities and college towns. It’s NearBear feature provides a ranking of over 1000 microbrews to help guide your selection and with user ratings and input the list will surely grow and change based on consumer opinion. It also has a PubFinder feature to locate the nearest local brewpubs whether you are out in your own town or traveling on business and need a place to grab a drink. And finally meal planner, pairing a certain type of wine with a meal is commonplace but now with BeerHero you can pair the most appropriate type of beer with your meal as well.
So there you have it, 5, er 6 must have apps for guys. With the recent release of the Hero from Sprint and the Motorola Droid from Verizon there are going to be a lot more Android users out there and the apps will continue to be developed at a frantic pace so we will check back in the future to see if this list needs to be expanded or modified. Until then have fun with your Android.

A2B is a much better app for finding your car than Carr Matey. But overall, a respectable list for ‘guys’.
