An electronic version of the sacred mancave, where men can relax, have fun, and even learn a thing or two
RSSLast week in my Monday Morning QB article I had made a pretty strong case for Brett Favre for MVP if he keeps is story book season going the way it has thus far. After yet another superb week where Favre led the Vikings to a 38-10 victory over the Chicago Bears Favre put up season best numbers of 392 yards passing and 3 TD’s brining his season totals to 2874 yards passing, 24 TD’s, 3 INT’s, a 69.3 completion percentage, and a passer rating of 112.1 which is by far the best of his career. The Vikings are working like a well oiled machine with everything clicking just right at 10-1 and Favre has seemingly brought Shiancoe, S. Rice, and rookie Percy Harvin from relative obscurity to superstar status in the NFL and rock star status in Fantasy Football leagues. With the stout Vikings defense, Adrian Peterson pounding the ball on the ground, and now Favre’s unbelievable arsenal of passing weapons the Vikings look difficult to tame this year and are making a case for the Super Bowl and for Favre as MVP. The biggest threat to Favre not hoisting huge numbers of 4000+ yards and 35+ TD’s with less than 5 INT’s is the Vikings continuing to dominate so often so early and resting Favre for large stretches of games as they get down the stretch to ensure he is fresh for the playoff run they are sure to make. As a fan it is fun to watch records get made and broken and this weekend Favre will set the new consecutive games played record for a non kicker after tying Jim Marshall last week at 283. He also has a shot at crossing 500 regular season TD’s this year since he sits at 488 right now.
But even with that great storyline there are still a couple of others that need to be in the discussion. The other obvious one is Drew Brees leading the Saints to an 11-0 record so far with another spectacular performance Monday night against the Patriots which frankly as much as I like how Brees and the Saints are playing right now, I didn’t expect that domination on Monday night. Brees passed for over 300 yards again and had 5 TD’s with no INT’s and is playing superior football this year as are the rest of the Saints. He had a great year last year passing for over 5000 yards and although he probably won’t beat that this year he will most certainly beat his TD total and passer rating for last year. His season totals so far are 3117 yards passing, 27 TD’s, 9 INT’s, and a whopping 112.6 passer rating. Without the superb play of Brees and his ability to use everyone to score the Saints wouldn’t be where they are now at 11-0 with a remaining schedule that only has 2 teams above .500 and a combined record of 22 – 33 giving them a very realistic chance at finishing the season 16-0. The Saints have made a statement so far this season and Brees leads that team and is a serious contender for MVP.
Also last week I fleetingly mentioned Chris Johnson as the lead running back candidate for the MVP award but given all of the superb QB play didn’t really give him much of a shot. Well that was before the Monday Night Football game against the Texans and obviously before his performance against the Cardinals this past weekend. So two more games under his belt and I have to say that he is not only in contention for the league MVP award but is as exciting a player to watch as any I have seen in years. Everyone is talking about how he has rushed for over 125 yards in 6 straight games this season and 7 in total and 4 of those greater than 150 yards. He currently has amassed 1396 yard rushing with a yards per carry average of 6.4, 294 yards receiving, and 10 TD’s total with only 1 fumble. He is averaging 127 yards a game and would need to average 141 yards a game over the last 5 games to break Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record of 2105 rushing yards but Chris Johnson is currently 79 yards ahead of where Dickerson was thru 11 games in his record setting 1984 season so it is definitely possible. And Johnson is doing all of this on a Titans team that started the season at 0 – 6 and has rattled off 5 straight wins which is a record in and of itself. It’s hard to imagine the Titans being able to do anything near this well without the amazing play making that Johnson has brought to the table this season and especially his 6 game stretch of 125 yard plus rushing games that have yielded 5 wins in a row for the Titans.
If these 3 players keep up their torrid pace and superb play making the MVP race will be an interesting one to watch down this final 5 game stretch and it is doubtful that any other player in the NFL factors into the discussion. Obviously any of them could stumble but they have all been playing near perfect and I would rather root for them to continue that way and make it an amazing MVP debate as the season winds down. Unfortunately in any other year I would be rooting for any of the 3 given their performance but only 1 can win the MVP award and I think they have all been worthy up to this point and are deserving. May the most deserving player win and I hope the rest of the games are as impressive to watch as these 3 amazing players and their sensational seasons continue.
