After a couple of weeks of playing I wrote a post called “45 Tips & Tricks for Evony Beginners, Noobs Need Love Too” to help new people starting out playing Evony and to speed up their learning process. Well after some more time I have expanded the list in this follow up article. If you haven’t read the first one take a peek at that one as well. A lot of useful information for Evony beginners in both articles.
46. Money – if you are gonna spend money in Evony try to take advantage of the deals they have. There is a deal to spend $30 in the first 7 days and you get a beginners package free worth an additional $18 or so. They also have occasional specials like around the holidays or a $5 for 250 Evony cents worth of stuff. I haven’t spent any money though.
47. Valleys – attacking valleys for max xp and minimum loss should be your plan. You can take on a higher level valley than yourself if you find one that is all of one troop like all warriors or all pikeman, they make great targets for a huge army of archers with a rainbow, give a ton of xp relative to your level, and cause minimal damage to your army. Hit the same spot every hour and it will be basically the same army there.
48. Valleys – attacking valleys for medals seems to have risen to lvl 7 – 10 lately. It appears the drop rate even for low level medals like Rose is extremely rare or non existent in low level valleys and they are only being seen in lvl 7+ valleys for all types of medals. And even then the drop rate in my experience is roughly 1% which according to my alliance mates I am a lucky Evony noob because that is better than what most are seeing. Just stick with it, some days seem better than others where I find 10+ medals and some days I don’t find any.
49. NPC cities tip – you can hit an NPC city every hour for max xp and get roughly 41k xp for a lvl 4 NPC or 93k xp for a lvl 5 NPC for instance but the resources take 8 hours to fully replenish so if you attack it before 8 hours it will only have a portion of its “full” resource level.
50. Rainbow – when attacking always use a rainbow because battles are staged in “rounds” and range plays a role in that. The more types of different troops you have in an army attacking the more times your archers get to shoot at the enemy before they are getting hacked at up close. So every good attack has a bunch of Archers and a bunch of meat shields or Warriors and then 1 of everything else that you can make except mechanicals like ballista and transport, they are too slow. Of course, some people find that just attacking with an insance amount of warriors, like 30k or 80k, is better because they are much faster and cheaper to build than archers and you get prestige for building troops.
51. Item Exchange – at this point it looks like there is no date or explanation of what it is. There is a button on the home page about it coming soon but it looks like that is for iEvony and not for swapping your in game items for new ones. We will have to wait and see but it sounds like Item Exchange may not be what we thought.
52. Flats – when you attack flats and have an open city slot you can make a new city or make a city and abandon it to become an NPC city you can attack and farm for resources. The lvl of the flat determines the level of the NPC city. Lvl 5 are best for max resource gain and minimum loss ratios but lvl 4 are the first really good ones you can attack early on before all your tech upgrades are complete at lvl 10. So focus on making lvl 4 and lvl 5 NPC cities close to yours but don’t go overboard with 4’s, a couple is fine and you will want the space for lvl 5 and higher NPC’s later. And the levels of flats and valleys change every day so if you don’t have any good ones right next to your town wait a day and recheck them. Every time you see a lvl 4 or 5 make it into an NPC and pretty soon you will be surrounded by level 4&5 NPC cities ripe for the picking. Don’t get sucked into lvl 1-3 NPC’s because later they aren’t worth your time to attack for resources and they just take up space like garbage and are in the way. Try to build every free flat space within 5-10 miles of your city into a lvl 5 with the exception of a few lvl 4’s.
53. Food shortage – you need enough food for the march so if your reserves get too low in a city you won’t be able to send your troops out until you produce enough. And if you send your troops to a valley and they occupy it after you conquer it they tend to consume twice as much food as if they are in your city so if you all of the sudden see a huge negative you may have a troop sitting in a valley somewhere you need to find and recall to the city. If you find yourself in refuge ask an alliance member to “scout run” you some food if they can. Scouts are super fast and don’t carry a lot but they can move a decent amount of food very fast.
54. Refuge means you are out of food and your troops are starving. When this happens you start losing troops and you don’t get them back. They basically die or go awol so make sure you have enough food.
55. Stop button on the Wheel of Fortune is not to stop the spin on the item you want or even to try for that matter. It is to stop playing the wheel of fortune if you have multiple aries amulets and could spin multiple times, the stop button ends it.
56. If you want to leave the Alliance you are in, ask one of the officers to expel you so you don’t take a prestige deduction.
57. Expelling can only be done by Host, Vice Host, and Presbyter ranks.
58. If you write a minimum 400 word review that is published on the web you can email the information to PR@Evony.com and they will review it for a chance to provide you a bonus of 500 Evony cents. Be sure to read the official rules on the Evony website before doing so as there are some guidelines such as them wanting to see it before it is published and that your lord name and server number are included in it. Update: I believe this contest is over but keep an eye out for others.
59. Valleys with a full rainbow of troops, i.e. at least 1 of everything, will inflict damage on your troops even if you massively out number them so try for valleys with 1 or 2 types of troops or a huge number of non ranged troops and destory them with archers from a distance.
60. Technology upgrades should be maxed at 10 as soon as possible with the exception of Privateering and Stockpile since warehouses are pretty commonly a waste of space and not used. However if you have the money and research time later in the game feel free to research Privateering for those few Evony enemies that may have warehouses.
61. Once your technologies are maxed at 10 you can destroy the buildings that were required to increase them. Like the Stables once Horseback riding is maxed out you don’t need stables anymore later in the game and can destroy it and build a barracks in that space instead. You select the building and then click the red “do not enter” symbol to destroy it. Forge and workshop fall into this category too when you don’t need them anymore, destroy them and reclaim the space.
62. Upgrading valleys – don’t forget to upgrade your valleys as you get stronger. Having 3-4 low level valleys early on is fine but when you start attacking lvl 7, 8, 10 etc you should abandon the lower level ones and conquer the higher ones so your production rates increase more.
63. Location, location, location, – before you start investing heavily in NPC cities around you look around. If you have a bunch of alliance members within 10 miles you should consider Teleporting to a new location and hoping you aren’t crowded. Having more than 2 in that close of a proximity late in the game will cause you to starve each other because you will have to be hitting the same NPC cities to feed your troops due to the sometimes high negative food production which can reach into the -1 or -2 million range for large armies.
64. Whispering players – just click on their name in chat and several options come up, one of which is Whisper which will then be in Pink text instead of the normal blue alliance or black world chat colors. You can also type /name to whisper them if you wish.
65. Chat – in the first 7 days you are stuck in beginners chat which can be some of the most discouraging chat you will see. Off topic and immature, so get out of it. The best thing you can do is join an alliance and then click the Alliance only chat so you don’t see that beginner chat crap about a bunch of people whining and making fun of the game etc.
66. Chat channels – there are several but the main ones are beginner chat, alliance chat, and world chat. There are little circle icons left of the chat box that if you hover over it will tell you what they are. just click one to join it.
67. Flashing quest icon – this is the most annoying thing when you don’t want to accept the reward yet. i.e. it will start flashing when you have 5 rose medals for promotion to Major but you want to wait until you have 10 and accept the title of Baronet instead so you can make more cities. Place a post it note or piece of tape over the icon on your screen if it bugs you seeing it flashing.
68. Title or Rank – Always accept Title promotions before rank promotions. Titles give you something like more cities but rank doesn’t. For instance always wait for Baronet before accepting the upgrade to Major since they both require Rose Medals. Major doesn’t give you anything other than rank whereas Baronet is a Title and allows you to build an additional city which is key for faster researching and making NPC cities to raid for resources to build your army faster.
69. Cav Waves – when you are trying to take over an enemy city or destroy it completely after you break its defenses you and your alliance members can send cav waves or repeated attacks of just 200 cavalry and a hero at a city 1 right after another. If you have 1000 cavalry in town send a wave and wait 5 seconds then send another and so on. Just keep hitting the city and it will drive loyalty way down fast. Plus Cavalry are really fast for attacks.
70. Cataphract – some people like them for defending a city against archers. AT’s are your number 1 defense but Cataphracts can help destroy a huge Archer army because they have an 8:1 advantage against Archers so for every Cataphract they take out 8 Archers theoretically. That’s pretty good and helps your AT’s when you are way outnumbered.
71. Browser freeze – some browsers seem to freeze more than others. I.E. seems to be worst with Firefox being more stable and Google Chrome seems to be the best according to most of the alliance members I play with. It does help in a lot of cases to exit your browser and relaunch the game occasionally and to not leave the browser open and minimized for long periods or over night, it seems to get slow. Nothing scientific here other than experience.
72. Medals – besides seeming to be only in valleys 7+ it appears that close fights tend to give more medals than completely destroying a valley. So even though you might have lost a few troops it may be better to not completely outnumber the valley if your goal is medals. You can still outnumber it a lot but the closer the fight might give you a better chance at a medal. I have seen the most medals when I take 1k -3k losses when sending 30k troops at a lvl 9-10 valley. Close fights yield more medals. Some also say that low level flats with a small force of scouts is the way to go but it hasn’t worked once for me yet so I am not sure about that.
73. Hero loyalty may have some influence on what Evony medals you get. So if you have the gold increase those heroes loyalty to 100 and hopefully you will see higher drop rates for medals. I guess they keep a few for themselves if they aren’t loyal enough.
74. Make your cities 10-15 miles apart so you have more area to farm and can get troops and resources to different areas faster. Being next door may seem cool in the beginning but later its a waste to be on top of yourself like that.
75. Under Attack – when you are attacked your Mayor is the hero that leads your troops in your cities defense. So if you are about to be attacked appoint your highest attack hero to help better defend your city from attack.
